About Nigeria

Nigeria is Africa's most populous nation and its largest economy — a country of staggering energy, creativity, and complexity that challenges and rewards in equal measure. History & Background

Nigeria's territory has been home to some of Africa's most sophisticated ancient civilisations. The Nok culture, flourishing between 1500 BCE and 500 CE, produced remarkable terracotta sculptures. The Benin Kingdom, which reached its peak between the 13th and 17th centuries, created world-famous bronze plaques and ivory carvings. The Kanem-Bornu Empire and the Sokoto Caliphate shaped much of northern Nigeria's political and cultural landscape for centuries. The trans-Atlantic slave trade devastated communities across the region from the 16th to 19th centuries.

British colonisation consolidated disparate territories into the single entity called Nigeria in 1914 — a name coined by journalist Flora Shaw for the vast territory surrounding the Niger River. Independence came on 1 October 1960 under Abubakar Tafawa Balewa. Nigeria's post-independence decades were marked by the devastating Biafran Civil War (1967–1970), subsequent military coups, and the return to democratic governance in 1999. The country's oil wealth has generated immense revenue but also profound inequality, corruption, and environmental damage in the Niger Delta.
